Nokia are, without a single doubt, one of the biggest names in the mobile phone world. The company have transformed into something unrecognisable from their beginnings in the Finnish wood pulp market in the mid 19th century into a company that deals in computer software and the internet and, as of the end of last year is the largest manufacturer of mobile telephones in the world.

Their sales in the final quarter of 2010 represented a huge 31% of all global mobile phone sales, with the nearest competitor being Samsung who make up 22% of the market share. It is no accident that Nokia have been able to become the world leader in mobile technology as they have worked in the area for almost 50 years. They released one of the first portable phones in history in 1984, the Mobira Talkman, and have regularly produced inspiring and popular telephones since that date.

Although you may not think it’s true, if the countless advertisements on television and in magazines and newspapers are to believe, not everybody out there wants all singing all dancing mobile phones.

It is great that mobile phones seem to be able to do everything nowadays and that it will not be long before we see the first ever mobile phone/shower/sink combo, but some of us want to keep our phones simple, even those of us who buy smartphones may only want a device that can call, message, e mail and browse the web without it having to be powerful enough to play the latest computer games on.
